CONGRATS TO THE RECIPIENTS OF OUR 2021 SCHOLARSHIP!

This year’s scholarship cycle was an intense one! It was another year where we had such amazing applicants, and considering the pandemic that we are still experiencing, our team found it tough to award just one scholarship. Luckily, we identified TWO scholarship winners once again! Our 2021 “Where Pop Culture and Cyber Security Meet” $1000 Scholarship went to Akosua Wordie, Junior Computer Science Major at Howard University, and our additional $500 scholarship was awarded to Freshman Computer Information Systems Major, Michael Bolos. This annual scholarship focuses on undergraduate students who demonstrate a current or growing interest in Cybersecurity, and are majoring in an area that has potential to impact the field. Those majors include, but are not limited to…

Each year, we connect with the scholarship winners directly, whether in-person or virtually, to get a sense for their plans and how we can support them. Our chats with both Akosua and Michael were quite inspiring. After providing further background on TCSI’s mission, our team shared details on our organization’s existing initiatives and gave them an early teaser of some of TCSI’s future plans! Both winners are doing great things within their respective universities and have impactful plans for the future. It was great to discuss potential ways that we can continue to collaborate with our scholarship winners and support one another through student ambassadorships and more.

Our $1000 scholarship winner, Akosua, caught our eye through her application which represented adding unique twists to Cybersecurity. Her biographical sketch highlighted her interests in film, which is a huge area that cybersecurity has the ability to impact, and her blog post topic was “Cyberpsychology” really keyed in on the people aspect of the field. During our discussion, she mentioned how Cybersecurity started off as an extra-curricular interest for her, but after recently taking an introductory Cybersecurity course, her interest in the intersection of law, policy, cybersecurity, and data privacy grew significantly. On the other hand, our $500 scholarship winner, Michael, has been exposed to programming since middle school and had the opportunity to earn a couple of tech-focused certifications while still in high school. He plans to use the cybersecurity knowledge to dive deeper into risk assessment and offensive security.

Please help us congratulate our 2021 awardees and continue to spread the word about this opportunity in preparation for next year’s scholarship, dropping in Spring 2022! You or someone you know could be our next winner!

We at TCSI hope to encourage young men and women to pursue a rewarding, lucrative, and meaningful career in a field that impacts the areas of cybersecurity and data privacy. This scholarship promotes interest in cybersecurity with thought provoking ideas around nontraditional pathways and careers in cybersecurity through its essay requirement. We encourage students to look at their everyday personal interests, and the world around them, through the lenses of security and data privacy.
